Steph Kronos, a pro-Union activist, tries to talk to Starbucks customers as she joins Starbucks workers, former employees, and supporters in holding signs in support of a strike, outside of a Starbucks store in Arlington, Virginia, on November 16, 2023. A group of labor unions said on Tuesday it was ending its proxy fight at Starbucks, after the two sides agreed last week to work toward a "foundational framework" on collective bargaining. The group said it thought shareholders were "optimistic" about a "good faith" effort by Starbucks to "repair its relationship with its workers." It was the first time that a labor union — typically opposed to activist campaigns — had drawn on the activist toolkit. The SOC hired well-respected communications, legal and proxy advisors who have worked on behalf of major activists and hedge funds.

The coalition is pushing to replace three current Starbucks board members with its own nominees. The SOC proxy presentation claims the company's board has backed what it calls an "unnecessarily confrontational" strategy with the union. Starbucks said it has not only a new CEO, but with these additions, it has added five new board members in the past year. The proxy presentation targets three current Starbucks board members: Ritch Allison, Andy Campion and Jørgen Vig Knudstorp. Allison, Campion and Knudstorp, specifically, provide "continuity and highly-valuable unique perspectives," the Starbucks presentation said.

Societe Generale on Thursday reported a sharp decline in fourth-quarter net profit on the back of weaker net banking income, but launched a new 280 million euro ($302 million) share buyback program. The French lender posted a group net income of 430 million euros, slightly above a consensus analyst forecast of 404 million euros, according to LSEG data, but well below the 1.07 billion euros recorded for the final quarter of 2022. It comes after the bank posted posted a group net income of 295 million euros for the third quarter, as resilient investment bank performance offset a sharp downturn in its French retail business. Thursday's result took France's third-largest listed bank's annual net profit to 2.49 billion euros, slightly above analyst expectations of 2.15 billion euros. However, quarterly net banking revenue dropped 9.9% year-on-year to 5.96 billion euros, which the bank attributed largely to a decline in net interest income in French retail, and its private banking and insurance division, along with the negative impacts from unwinding hedges.

McDonald's will begin virtual focus groups with some owners and operators as a part of an ongoing civil rights audit, according to a message to franchisees viewed by CNBC. Last year, shareholders approved of a proposal by SOC Investment group to conduct a civil rights audit in a close vote. The note also assured owners that neither McDonald's nor anyone employed by the company would participate in the groups or the selection process. The audit comes as McDonald's has made changes to its franchising structure and restaurant grading system in recent years. Other major companies including Citi, Starbucks and Airbnb have undertaken civil rights audits in recent years, and last year Apple and Amazon shareholders approved proposals for similar assessments.

George Kurtz, CEO of cybersecurity company CrowdStrike , spoke with CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday about the company's focus on automation and the use of generative artificial intelligence to launch Charlotte AI, a "virtual security analyst." "Generative AI is a new type of artificial intelligence, and essentially Charlotte AI is our, is our virtual security analyst," Kurtz said. Kurtz explained that Charlotte AI can help automate the duties of a security operations center (SOC) analyst, or someone who deals with cybersecurity duties on a day-to-day basis. The program is intended to lessen mundane work that analysts perform, turning tasks that may have taken hours into ones that take only minutes, he said. According to Kurtz, analysts can have conversations with Charlotte AI and ask questions about security threats in the environment, how it applies to their industry, what assets are at risk, how to fix those assets — and even create a report about the situation.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSHENZHEN, China/SHANGHAI, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Chinese chip stocks rallied on Wednesday following Huawei Technologies' (HWT.UL) launch of its new Mate 60 Pro phone, as investors speculated it could be using a 5G capable chip which, if true, would mark a win for China's local semiconductor sector. On Tuesday, the company began selling its Mate 60 Pro around midday for 6,999 yuan ($960) in an unusually low-key fashion, having given no advance notice or conducted advertising. The specifications provided for the Mate 60 advertised its ability to make satellite calls, but provided no information on the power of the chipset inside. Huawei, whose woes with Washington have become a key flashpoint in U.S.-China relations, declined to comment on whether the phone was 5G capable but said in a statement the Mate 60 series was its most powerful Mate model ever. Sometimes there’s not enough rain when seedlings need water, or too much when the plants need to keep their heads above water. Rice farmers are shifting their planting calendars. On top of that, there’s climate change: It has upended the rhythm of sunshine and rain that rice depends on. That’s a fraction of the emissions from coal, oil and gas, which together account for 35 percent of methane emissions. His experiment, carried out over seven years, concluded that by not flooding the fields continuously, farmers can reduce rice methane emissions by more than 60 percent.
